Barefoot Rain Boots: Why We Made Galocha

We have wanted to make barefoot rain boots for a long time. But creating a waterproof barefoot boot that could actually handle autumn and winter weather while keeping the freedom, flexibility and natural foot shape of barefoot footwear wasn't as simple as it sounds. So when we finally made Galocha, there were quite a few questions we had to answer.

Why did we make a barefoot rain boot?

Because we didn't want rain to mean giving up barefoot footwear. If you already wear barefoot shoes, you probably know the dilemma: when the weather gets colder and wetter, finding waterproof barefoot boots that are functional, comfortable and actually look good isn't always easy.We wanted to make a boot that could take you through rainy city streets, muddy paths and colder days without forcing you back into conventional footwear. And we wanted it to look like something you'd genuinely want to wear. What makes a rain boot barefoot? For us, it's not enough for a boot to simply be called “barefoot”. Galocha has the features we consider essential to barefoot footwear:A wide toe box, giving your toes room to spread naturally Zero drop, keeping your heel and forefoot on the same levelA flexible sole, allowing your feet to move naturallyA shape designed around the foot rather than forcing the foot into a conventional shoe shapeSo although Galocha looks like a classic Chelsea boot, it still gives your feet the space and freedom of barefoot shoes.

Why is the sole thicker than our usual minimalist models?

This was one of the biggest decisions we had to make. Galocha is designed for conditions that our lighter barefoot shoes aren't necessarily made for: rain, mud, cold ground and slippery surfaces. That's why the sole is somewhat thicker than our usual barefoot soles. But thicker doesn't mean rigid or restrictive. We kept the zero-drop design, wide toe box and flexibility that are so important to us, while creating a deeper tread with much more traction. Because a barefoot rain boot needs grip. We wanted Galocha to feel secure on wet pavements, muddy paths and different outdoor surfaces without turning it into a stiff, conventional rain boot.

Why did we give it such a deep tread?

Because waterproof isn't enough. What's the point of keeping your feet dry if you're sliding around on wet ground? The new sole features a deep, high-traction tread designed to provide grip on different surfaces. It's one of the things that makes Galocha different from many minimalist or barefoot boots. You still get a flexible, zero-drop sole, but with the traction and anti-slip properties you want from a rain boot.

Why use TR when Mukishoes usually works with natural materials?

This was probably one of the hardest questions for us. Natural materials are an important part of what we do at Mukishoes. So choosing a synthetic material for Galocha wasn't a decision we made casually. But we also wanted to create something genuinely waterproof. For this particular product, we needed a material that could withstand constant exposure to rain, was easy to clean and could provide the protection expected from a proper rain boot. That's where TR, a thermoplastic-nylon hybrid, came in. Sometimes making the right product means choosing the material that is actually best suited to its purpose, even when it falls outside what we normally use.

Are barefoot rain boots suitable for winter?

We think they should be.That's why Galocha comes with a removable wool and foam insole. The wool provides warmth for colder days, while the foam adds a little cushioning. This makes Galocha particularly comfortable as a barefoot winter boot, especially if you're used to a little more protection underfoot during the colder months. And because the insole is removable, you can adapt the boot to your preference.

Is Galocha still a barefoot boot if it looks like a conventional Chelsea boot?

That was actually the idea. We didn't want to make a boot that looked “barefoot”. We wanted the practicality of a rain boot, but in the timeless shape of a stylish Chelsea boot something you could wear just as easily on a rainy city day as on a muddy walk. The clean black shape, minimalist design and mid-calf height make Galocha easy to wear with the clothes you already have. There's no need to choose between your style and your footwear philosophy. From the outside, it looks familiar. Inside, your feet know the difference.

Why black? Are more colours coming?

Because we wanted Galocha to become the pair you reach for again and again.Black works with everything, doesn't show every splash of mud and fits equally well into a city wardrobe or a weekend spent outdoors. And honestly, we wanted a rain boot that came in the shape of a stylish Chelsea boot, something sleek enough for the city, but with all the protection you expect from a proper rain boot. But we are looking into new colours for the future...

Why did it take us so long to make one?

Making a rain boot is easy. Making a barefoot waterproof boot that is comfortable, flexible, wide enough for natural foot movement, has enough grip for wet conditions, looks good and still feels like a Mukishoes model  is considerably harder. We spent time looking for the right materials, experimenting with designs and working with the right manufacturing partners. Then our sole manufacturer presented us with a prototype. And we knew. This was the one.Can you wear barefoot rain boots in the city and outdoors? Yes and that was another important part of the design. We didn't want Galocha to be a boot you only wore when the forecast promised rain. It's made for everyday life: wet city streets, autumn walks, muddy paths, unexpected encounters with nature and days when you simply need more protection from the weather. The waterproof construction and deep tread make it practical outdoors, while the sleek Chelsea boot design means it doesn't look out of place in the city.

What did we refuse to compromise on?

The things that make up the essence of Mukishoes. Your toes still have room to spread. Your heel and forefoot stay on the same level. Your feet can still move. The sole is still flexible. But now you also have waterproof protection, warmth, traction and a boot that can handle the messier side of autumn and winter.
Galocha is different from what we usually make. And that's exactly why we made it. Because sometimes creating something new doesn't mean forgetting what you believe in. It means finding a new way to stay true to it. Galocha is our first barefoot rain boot, waterproof, flexible, zero-drop and made in Portugal for rainy streets, muddy paths, cold days and everything in between. And we think it might just become the pair you reach for every time you look out the window and see rain.
