Meet the Makers: Finding new colors with ANIRAM

Natural and artisanal ways to dye fabrics using plants and other materials that can be found in nature, have been something we admire and draw inspiration from since the beginning of our journey.
We love the history and art involved in these processes, from the research to the techniques used, which often lead us to learn about new plants and materials, as well as to discover new and passionate artisans and forms.
We have collaborated with different “plant-dyers” over the years, from small ateliers to innovative companies, and now we are happy to introduce you to our latest collaboration, with the talented Portuguese artist Aniram, who dyed the fabric for our new limited-edition shoe of the same name.
We discovered her small business through a recommendation at one of the many events we’ve attended over the years, and it’s been a pleasure to work with her on the creation of this shoe that we now present to you.
To tell you the story of this shoe, we talked to Marina, the woman behind Aniram Textile Studio, so that she can tell you more about her project, techniques, and processes in her own words.

About the dyeing process and materials

Which flowers did you use to dye this fabric?

This fabric was dyed with the roots of Rubia Tinctorum and the petals of marigolds, coreopsis, and “black” hollyhocks.

Where do you source the flowers and plants you use?

The plants I use come from small farmers who produce them sustainably and organically.

Can you briefly explain how you do this dyeing process?

This dyeing process is a long journey of care and dedication. It begins with pre-preparing the fabric, which involves an intensive wash of the fibers for better pigment absorption, followed by mordanting to ensure better pigment adhesion and durability. After this preparation, the fabric undergoes the dyeing phase using organic material through a “steam cooking” process.

About ANIRAM

How did the ANIRAM project start, and what is it about?

The ANIRAM project was born from curiosity about obtaining natural colours without using industrial chemical processes. The central idea of ANIRAM is to create unique pieces made with intention, with history and meaning, in the most sustainable way possible.

FAQ’s and Advice

Can anyone do this?

Yes, it is a relatively simple process. With some dedication and research, anyone can do it.

Do you have any tips for people who want to try something similar?

You can start with a workshop — there are many available at the moment (I myself offer some). After that, it becomes a process of self-learning and trial and error. Natural dyeing is not a 100% exact process—there are many variations, and rarely are two pieces alike. But that’s the beauty of the process.
